My Story…
This will be my inaugural year participating in Miles for Migraine!
I have been dealing with migraines and headaches since I was six years old, so this charity means a lot to me. The "invisible, silent" pain that no one can physically see and unless someone experiences this pain themselves, it is challenging to understand.
For me, migraines can be debilitating and change the course of the day; I experience auras, sensitivity to light, sound, and smell, nausea, and when it is severe, the nausea leads to vomiting, and I also have nose bleeds. I can plan my day, but when I have a migraine, I have to take medication, lay down in a cool, dark, quiet room, and wait for the pain to go away or black out from the pain until I wake up.
Migraines occur most for me when I am premenstrual, heavily stressed, do not sleep enough, and most of all, when the weather changes drastically (e.g., big temperature drops and surges, incoming rain storm, being in the sun for too long, etc.).
For preventative care, I maintain a balanced diet, drink plenty of water, avoid trigger foods, exercise, practice yoga and meditation, and do my best to maintain stress levels and get quality sleep. When I feel a migraine or headache coming on, depending on the symptoms, I take Excedrin first and/or I take Rizatriptan to prevent or lessen the severity of the migraine. I have on-hand Ondansetron for the nausea as well, and I use Liquid I.V. to increase hydration.
By participating in Miles for Migraine, I hope to raise awareness for migraine sufferers and raise funds to continue researching solutions in hopes that no one will have to go through this pain!
